Monday Progress...

I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter weekend with family. Don't you just love Easter? I certainly do. Going to Church and seeing everyone all dressed up in Easter colors. Easter reminds me that Spring is here. Well here in Hawaii, its warm all year long. All the tropical flowers and orchids are all blossoming. But for some reason, yesterday made me think of all the spring flowers blossoming right about now. I really miss the different flowers I had at our home in Seattle. Anyway, since I have to take it easy for awhile, it was funny seeing the men (husband, brother & father) preparing Easter dinner. They prepared baked bone-in ham, roasted potatoes, steamed asparagus and my DF made Spanish rice. I couldn't help but smile. An event I will always cherish! I didn't think of taking a picture. *grrr* Dinner was great.

Monday Progress:

2017 New Quilt Bloggers was a huge success for me! If you visited my post and commented, THANK YOU SO MUCH! I LOVE all the comments and suggestions. I am so happy I joined in. I needed the help to succeed in blogging. Whats so interesting is I got to meet a lot of bloggers!

I manage to work on 182-days Solstice challenge. For last week Pat Sloan posted block #17/25 Spring Fever. Here is my version of block.

Now for OMG (One Monthly Goal) update. I manage to finish all three quilts. But I am afraid I won't be able to complete finish quilting the three quilt tops. I tried moving my machine around to see if my wrist will handle. However it started to hurt a bit. The surgeon went through my right wrist instead of my groin. Maybe next month I will be can finish it.

In the meantime, my husband is doing the cutting for me. YAY! If I can only convince him to ALWAYS cut for me. I don't like to cut. I don't know of anyone who likes cutting. Are you one of those?

Have a great week. Until next time...

2017 New Quilt Bloggers Blog Hop

Hello and welcome to My Sew Called Life. My name is Liz and living in a rural town called Pahoa (Pa'-hoe-a') on the Big Island of Hawaii.

I am taking part in the 2017 New Quilt Bloggers Hop which is hosted this year by awesome bloggers (Host). They are Yvonne @ Quilting Jetgirl (www.quiltingjetgirl.com), Leanne @ she can quilt (shecanquilt.com) & Beth @ Cooking Up Quilts (cookingupquilts.com). Why I say they are "awesome" is because they are taking what spare time they have in helping us newbies to improve our blogging skills. I must say that in just a couple of weeks, I learned how to improve my blog appearance and how to make buttons, etc... They are super amazing! > I am so happy I am participating.  I want to learn more about quilting and meet other quilters.

The 2017 New Quilt Bloggers Hop is sorted into three Hives. Each hive had to come up with a group name and button. The group I am in, we all voted for a name of our group and we are called "Blooming Quilters". Many thanks to Laura @ (www.sliceofpiquilts.com) for creating a beautiful button for us.

Love of Quilting:

I started quilting roughly 20 years ago. I had a full-time job as an Office Administrator until 2009 when the company had to lay me off! We were living in Seattle at the time. When I came home that day with my "pink" slip, I had a good cry. Then cleaned my house until 10:30pm that night. LOL

The next morning, I realized my life had changed. To bring in some income, I would scope out the garage sales and Craigslist for sewing machines. I knew machines such as older Pfaff and Singer featherweight machines would do well. I would sell them on Ebay and I did so well that I was able to pay for utilities and groceries. I have never filed for unemployment claims in my entire career. It was an eye opener for me. I collected unemployment for 2 years and after submitting over 500 resumes to everyone and anything, I got three interviews and two companies said I was over qualified. I didn't understand that at first but realized, with my engineering and accounting degrees, it was hopeless and I finally had to accept the fact that I am done!

In 2014, we moved to the Big Island of Hawaii. Last year, my husband built me a sewing studio. My studio is 672sqft and love being in there. I will post pictures when I am totally done with organizing and cleaning. You will see how a fabric hoarder lives. Ha ha. So stay tune! (=

Here are some of my favorite quilts. This winter, I plan on starting a Quilt-A-Long summer quilt. I love samplers and traditional quilts. As you can see a few of them here.

Irish Quilt. Its fading now after so many use.  I believe I finished this in 2008

Whimsical Summer - I designed this quilt using EQ6. I love sampler quilts.

I love orchids and the color purple. This Hawaiian queen size quilt is a dark purple.
Hand appliquéd and hand quilted.

My Orchid flowers. Favorite flower.

This quilt is called "A tribute to Abraham Lincoln". From the book Civil War Love Letters by Rosemary Youngs. I just love this author! Each block had a story and the only fabrics I used more than once were the sashing, cornerstones and border. So you can guess I had A LOT of civil war reproduction fabrics. Ha ha

Here is the back of the quilt. I had Natalia www.piecenquilt.com. She did a beautiful job. This quilt was in a couple of shows.

When I am not sewing, quilting, I am always doing something with my kids. Meet my clan
  •  Gotta love Chickens! They are so friendly! They love going on the deck whenever I am around. These chickens are called either Barred Rock or Plymouth chickens.
  • Misty the oldest of the clan. Born August 15, 1999. I got her at just 8 weeks old. The others are deathly afraid of her.
  • Oscar. He is 12-1/2 yrs old mini dachsund. The sweetest boy ever!
  • Cody. Don't know much about him other than, he jumped into my niece's car. She did not know what to do. Long story short, after two weeks, she flew him to me. He was born on Oahu.
  • "knucklehead" Kapena (Ka-pen-a') aka Kappy aka "I RULE". He is 1/2 pug, 1/2 shih tszu.
  • 4 yr. old Goliath! What a lovable soul! He super smart, and loves to talk with mommy and daddy. He weights 118 lbs. now.
Last but not least...my DH Gary. I am very blessed to be married to this wonderful MAN. He is so supportive of what I do, a very patient loving man!

Back in 2010, I wanted to blog and tell my stories of quilting, family, kids, etc... I hired Emily from Blogaholic.com to help me design my blog. She does awesome design work and such a fantastic person to work with! She does exactly what you want. She won't let you down. If you are looking to design your blog and don't know how to start, visit her site or send her an email. Anyway, I wanted this blog to be not just about quilting but of everything else in my life.
That is why I chose the name "My Sew Called Life..."
  • Tips on Quilting: If its not too late, Don't be a fabric hoarder like me!  It is overwhelming and depressing! Try to purchase fabrics only if you are going to use it right away or planning it for a particular project. DON'T buy because "it is so pretty or I have to have it!". When you accumulate a LOT of fabrics, you'll not only feel overwhelmed and depressed, but you will end up purchasing more containers, shelving units to store your stash and purchase fabrics that you already have. Trust me, being a fabric hoarder is not the way!
  • Help Wanted: I have two accounts on Instagram. I am trying to figure out how to delete one of the accounts. Also I am trying to figure out the easy way to upload pictures to Pinterest and Instagram. I am having no success. If you have any suggestions or can direct me to watch or read a tutorial, I will be forever grateful!
  • About Me: Besides quilting, you can find me at our Church volunteering, reading and spending quality time with my dear hubby watching Chicago Fire, Chicago Meds, Chicago Justice or a British show on PBS. When I am in my studio, I love love TCM! I love watching or listening to old black & white movies.
Sorry this post is long, but I couldn't stop typing. LOL  I hope you enjoyed my story. Thank you so much for stopping by! I hope you will stop by again.

Please let me know your tips on quilting. I love learning new things. Also I could really use your help or input on Instagram and Pinterest.

Long Scary Week...

I've been away this week on Oahu. As you know, I've been having some health issues lately. My breathing and chest pain been hard to deal with. I thought it was because I am going through Post menopausal. WRONG!

So Monday, April 3rd, I had an appointment to see a Cardiac Dr. He informed me that he is referring me to a Cardiac Surgeon at Queen's Medical Center on Oahu. I was so afraid when he stated that it would be 3 options. 1 - Angiogram, 2 - Stint or 3 - By-pass. Okay so I understood the that. Then on Thursday, I had an Echo Cardiac gram done. They couldn't tell me anything but what scared me is when she kept outlining areas on the monitor that were black. I tried to get some answers but no luck (worth a try). Then on Friday, I received a call from the Cardiac Surgeon office and stated that I am scheduled for Tuesday, April 11th. You can imagine what was going through my mind. I don't like the UNKNOWN!

My husband had to stay home because we could not find anyone to keep our dogs. I left a day early and stayed with my brother and his family! I have such an amazing family! They took off from work on short notice just so I don't have to be alone! Anyway, I stay over night in the hospital because my right artery (near heart) was blocked! So they had to install a stint. I was sort of shock! But I was so thankful it was only one artery. I knew then that I was feeling and breathing better. I was so surprise that they even gave me a printout of before and after pictures of my artery. Check it out. Note: I shaded my birthday...don't want everyone to know my age! HA

Before
After

They took care of me when I came home the next day. Made sure I didn't do a thing!

I came home on Friday and my other brother escorted me home. I didn't have to ask, they talked and made the decision on their own. I don't know what I would do if I didn't have them in my life! I am so Blessed to have them!

Doctor suggested I make a life change. My eating habits which I have already started but I do need to do more. The worse one is stress! I need to teach myself how to relax more. My husband and I had a long talk about life changes and we have started making some changes!

This was my week! I am so thankful & grateful that it was not worse! I know now that I need to pay more attention to what my body is telling me! Until next week...

Finished my block for 182-Days Solstice for the week. Block 16/25 Friendship Block and finished hand appliquéing the pedals and tear drops on block  14/25 Honey Bee block.

Friendship Block

Honey Bee Block - I add small yo-yos to give my block a little pizzazz. (=

I really do like how all the blocks are coming along together. We are half way through the challenge.

Hope you are having a wonderful weekend! It is Palm Sunday tomorrow so off to Church I go. Then on Monday, I have a few appointments before I head to Oahu for another appointment.

Take care all!

One Monthly Goal - April 2017

Three log cabin projects will be my April project for One Monthly Goal challenge. The pieces are all sewn together a few years ago. I wanted to come up with a pattern for these blocks and now I can put them together. I plan on getting them the top and then quilt them all by the end of the month.

So this is my project for April. Do you have a project you would like a complete but need a little push? Go over to One Monthly Goal and join us.

182-Day Solstice...

Another Pat Sloan easy block. Block 15/25 is called "Precious Fabric". Now a "precious fabric" of mine but I wanted to use this particular fabric for this block. Picture is not all that great. I am taking photos with my phone and still learning how to take pictures with it.

I am still working on block 14/25 Honey Bee. The block is sewn together. However, the pedals and tear drops are hand appliqué.

Church

Its been quite busy this morning. As you all probably know, I am Catholic and it is lent season. This weekend is the fifth Sunday in Lent a week before Palm Sunday. This weekend my husband and I had to run up to our Church and cover all the crosses and statues. I thought you would like to see our little Church.

Our little Church, Sacred Heart Parish

Inside of the Church

After covering crosses & statues, I had to run over to my dad's house. My cousins flew in this morning for the weekend. They were sweet enough to come and visit. Our dads are brothers. Our dads came from a family of three boys. But the family grew between the brothers. Just my dad side, 7 children (me oldest), 17 grandchildren, 16 great-grand and 4 great-great! So just us alone, we are big.
Anyway, here are pictures of our visit. It was a really good visit seeing my cousins!

Well today, is cleaning up my studio and deciding what I want to do for April. I am pushing towards learning and re-acquinted with my Longarm machine.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

FINALLY...

FINISHED! YAY

Sewed the last stitch on this quilt! Here is the finish top!

Civil War Chronicles. As soon as I laid the top down, my 12-1/2 yr. old boy, Oscar wanted his picture taken.

This is the center. "Os" wanted to be the center of attention! HA
Looking at this picture of Oscar, You would think his color is black & grey. His color use to be black & tan. My poor guy is sure showing his age like his mama!

Os "thinks" this quilt is for him! 😏😙

Border. The corners of this quilt, I had to make an adjustment. I must have did something wrong with triangles on each side. Rather than trying to figure out and start using my ripper, I decided to adjust the block on the corners. I am satisfied!

I need to get my gear going with my longarm machine! I am super top heavy now! *ugh*

Next on the list is to get everything ready to work at our Church this Friday. I made cloths to cover all the cross and statues last year. I am Catholic and volunteer a lot at our Church. Since moving here to the Big Island, I wanted to do more for God! Helping others, attending Church more often, etc... What I found out from my family is that most of the things that I am doing, my mother (R.I.P. mom) use to do! I knew some things but never knew a lot! The one thing I will NOT do and that is join the Choir! HECK NO! My mom sang in the choir. I have a hard time speaking to the entire congregation as it is. To sing???? no, No, NO! lol

On Friday, I will have  to figure out what is going to be next for OMG (One Monthly Goal) for April. Maybe longarm a few tops? Sounds good to me! But first to clean up my mess from this project and continue organizing studio. One day I'll get done.

Getting Closer...

To the finish! I started late start this weekend to finish my UFO "Civil War Chronicles". I actually started putting the blocks together late Saturday night and yesterday after Church. I underestimated my timing on this quilt! *ugh*  Here is the center of this quilt.

Center Block

I tried several ways to take a good picture and this is the best one. Still trying to learn how to take good pictures. Anyway, I need to add a "HUGE" triangle on all four sides. Then sew the 68 - 6-1/2" blocks together for the border.

I hope when I am done putting this quilt together, the sun is out so I can lay this quilt outside for a good photo.

Have a wonderful week. You know what I will be doing! (=

Next On The List...

Or should I say "Next on my bucket" list! In 2009, I started Civil War Chronicles. After cutting and sewing pieces together, I put the project aside. Every BOM kit, I had to make at least a quantity of 4 16" blocks. However, one of the BOM kits, I had to make 68 6"blocks! You read right...Sixty Eight Blocks!!! I believe that is when I put the whole project in its own container. I was BURNED OUT!

So to get this project done, this weekend, my plan is to work on it. Here are the blocks laid out on my cutting table. Now to put them together.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend. Do find some time to do something you so enjoy doing.

Another UFO...

Off my bucket list! Better late than never...Right?

February Quilt is finished. YAY! Finished quilt size is 80" x 98". I made a couple of changes. Truth be told, I messed up while cutting. The blue strips you see around the center should have been an orange piece. I am happy with the results.

3's Company BOM

Now to decide should I custom quilt or all over quilting. I am still new to longarm quilting. So I think I will wait until I feel comfortable.

Now to move on to my next project. I need to get caught up on my other projects and decide what will be my next UFO.

Hope you had a great St. Patrick's Day. It was quiet here at home.

Until next time,

Slow Progress

here in my studio. Still dealing with the Doctor's and have scheduled appts. to see specialists on Oahu. The problem here on the Big Island is there are very few GOOD doctors! So we accept what we have and fly to Oahu to actually see good doctor's. For the next two months, I have to fly back and forth to see specialists and in between take my 80 yr. old father to Oahu for his Cataract surgery. Staying positive.

I've manage to sew a few blocks.

182-day Solstice Challenge

My plan this week is to get caught up on my UFOs this weekend. I have a meeting Saturday morning at our Church.

Usually during lent season, Catholic tradition is fish on Fridays. However, since tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day. Our Bishop here dispensation from abstinence from meat. But I will follow the tradition tomorrow.

Wishing you all

CONFESSION TIME

I honestly thought I could finish my OMG (One Monthly Goal) project "3's Company." This past weekend was too rough for me. I've been dealing with some "life changing" issues. I was diagnosed "Post Menopausal". To make things worse, I am also dealing with my thyroids. I have a hard time drinking cold water, every muscle and joint in my body aches like hell. But what's worse is I am experiencing temporary memory loss! These are all (except thyroid) the symptoms I've been experiencing. I WANT MY BODY BACK!!!

I tried working on the last few blocks. When I had to cut the pieces out, I forget to check off what I have cut. Then I would screw up by cutting the pieces "AGAIN" but with the other fabric! SO I stopped and gave up! I know I can find a piece of fabric in my stash to replace my screw up. However, I just walked away from it all for now.

These symptoms just HIT me all of a sudden and I am trying my best to deal with it. My doctor prescribed an antibiotic for my thyroids. But the darn prescription is doing nothing for me other than shortly after taking pill (horse pill), my chest hurts like someone just kicked it!

The Doctor's here in Hilo are something else! I am so used to having a good Doctor who knows exactly what I am going through! But here in Hilo, its a whole different world. I feel like I am living in the third world. LOL

Anyway, this is my story of why I cannot finish any projects this month! Yes I had my sister and her granddaughter here visiting, but they were only here for the weekend. Bless my sisters heart, she has been helping me researching through Google about Post Menopause. I too have been researching and I am not liking what I am reading!

SO life goes on Right? I will finish up my 3's Company when I come back next week. I am going to Oahu on Thursday to visit my siblings, visit my mother's grave. I also have an eye appt.! You read right! (= I am flying to get my eyes check. Oahu have better doctors. So IF I can find a Doctor that can see me while I there, I definitely will stay for that!

Moving forward, I did manage to get caught up on my Sparkling Sampler blocks. But I think I am going to not start a new project for OMG until April. In March,  I will finish my 3's Company, finish a row or two of my Dear Jane and Farmer's Wife Sampler and get caught up on 182-Day Solstice.

I will write again upon my return. Have a wonderful week. Do find some time to do what you enjoy! Until next time...

Its been very busy here with family coming in for a few days. Its been great having family here for a while. My sister and her granddaughter are gone now. I was behind in my Sparkling Sampler. I got two blocks done.

Now to get my OMG for February done. I am really hoping to get February challenge done by Monday. If you recall, I decided on Thimbleberries BOM 3's Company. I will reveal on Monday finished or not!

New Look

I like to change things up from time to time here at home. Whether changing furniture around or on my blog. I wanted a new look for my blog. I like the new clean & crisp look.

Off to get started on my OMG challenge. If you like to check out what others are doing, just click on the picture below. There are a lot of us taking this challenge.   I like the fact that you have exactly a month to complete your project. Since February is such a short month, I need to get going on this project.

http://www.elmstreetquilts.com/2017/02/one-monthly-goal-february-goal-setting.html

I won't be doing much tomorrow in Studio. My DF (Dear-Father) has an eye appointment.

I wish you all

182-Day Challenge...

Its been so busy this past week. The only sewing done this past week was completing 182-Day Solstice Challenge, Block 8, Never Ending Love . If you are interested in seeing other blocks, click here. There are really pretty blocks and their version.

Here is my block. Since Valentine's day is in a few days, I thought it would be nice if I completed this block in red. The red fabric has little hearts. Click on picture. I am not a "pink" person. Pink would have been cuter but I chose a swirl pattern.

Block 8 - Never Ending Love

I really need to get caught up on my February OMG challenge.
I am still working on

block 1.

Off to do some sewing. Have a wonderful week everyone. Hope you find some time to do what you so enjoy!

W.I.P. (Work In Progress) update...

I didn't get any sewing done this week! My brother arrived here on Monday and its been kind of crazy here.

This week I was able to keep up with 182 days Solstice. Block six.

For this block, I used Moda Layer Cake "Serenade" by Kate Spain. I am mixing layer cake with other fabrics. It turned out nicely.

I will be busy next week playing catch up on my other projects. I really want to stay focus this year.

Have a wonderful weekend!

One Monthly Goal...3's Company

For February, I will be working on a Thimbleberries BOM 3's Company.
The quilt size is 80"x 90". I am linking up with "One Monthly Goal" at Elm Street Quilts.

http://www.elmstreetquilts.com/2017/02/one-monthly-goal-february-goal-setting.html
